At its annual meeting in Brewster, the MNA overwhelmingly approved a measure to join a massive nationwide union representing nearly 150,000 nurses. But fewer than 2 percent of the MNA’s members actually voted in favor of it.

The Service Employees International Union, which represents 3,200 janitors in Houston, is launching its efforts at a time when many workers are getting pink slips and taking wage cuts. And the union has had links to ACORN, the national community organization that has drawn fire for alleged misbehavior by some employees, former officers and voter registration contractors.
