CVS Caremark Corp. is challenging an attempt by a union coalition to reach out to retail pharmacy workers in southern New Jersey.
The Put Pharmacy First campaign has been courting retail pharmacists nationwide who object to "the influence of 'fast food pharmacy' practices that put profits ahead of patients," according to its Web site. Behind the campaign are unions belonging to the Change to Win Federation, whose membership includes the United Food and Commercial Workers and the Service Employees International Union.

LAS VEGAS, Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- In a settlement that is essentially a plea bargain with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), which conducted a two-month investigation into massive illegal conduct, MountainView Hospital in Las Vegas, and its parent company, the giant HCA chain, have pledged to end their surveillance, interrogation, bribery, threats, and other unfair treatment of registered nurses.

SMITHFIELD — Smithfield Foods Inc. is denying claims that it engaged in unfair labor practices with the union that represents workers at the company's soon-to-close South packing plant.
In a formal response to charges filed by the National Labor Relations Board, Smithfield asserts that the union — Food Processors Local 1046 — is defunct and no longer the bargaining unit for South Plant workers who will transfer to the adjacent North Plant.
Further, the company states, the union's "bad faith excuses any duty on the part of (Smithfield) to bargain.

NORTH ADAMS -- The National Labor Relations Board began looking into charges of unfair labor practices at Sweet Brook Nursing Home in Williamstown this week, when it held a hearing in Northern Berkshire District Court.
The hearing took place on Tuesday and Thursday. It will be continued on Nov. 3-5.

PRINCETON, NJ -- Gallup finds organized labor taking a significant image hit in the past year. While 66% of Americans continue to believe unions are beneficial to their own members, a slight majority now say unions hurt the nation's economy. More broadly, fewer than half of Americans -- 48%, an all-time low -- approve of labor unions, down from 59% a year ago.
