ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — The parent company of two Atlantic City casinos targeted for a possible dealers' strike began planning Monday to hire replacement workers in the event of a walkout.
Harrah's Entertainment Inc. said it started implementing a contingency plan that includes hiring replacement workers for any dealers who go out on strike.

On July 24, 2009, the federal minimum wage will increase from $6.55 per hour to $7.25 per hour. This increase is the third and final increase in a three phase
process. In light of the impending increase, there are several issues of which employers must be aware to prepare for the change.

A half-dozen senators friendly to labor have decided to drop a central provision of a bill that would have made it easier to organize workers.
The so-called card-check provision — which senators decided to scrap to help secure a filibuster-proof 60 votes — would have required employers to recognize a union as soon as a majority of workers signed cards saying they wanted a union. Currently, employers can insist on a secret-ballot election, a higher hurdle for unions.

ST. PAUL - United Food & Commercial Workers Local 789 filed charges against Walmart Wednesday, alleging the world's largest retailer violated the National Labor Relations Act by engaging in unfair labor practices at its St. Paul store.
Workers at the Midway store and many other locations in Minnesota and other states are engaged in a union organizing campaign.

Record spending by the Service Employees International Union to help elect President Barack Obama has paid political dividends but extracted a financial toll.
Officials say the fast-growing union spent $85 million during the campaign season last year, and that it was well worth it: The Obama administration has appointed union officials to top posts and is backing legislation to make it easier for workers to organize.
