The number of American workers belonging to a labor union increased for the second year in row—and is now up to 12.4 percent. Prior to 2007, union membership rates had not increased in the last quarter century and the current union membership rates are still a fraction of what they were
in the early 1980s. This second year of growth demonstrates an intense desire among Americans to become unionized, but significant legislative changes must occur in order for a substantial portion of the American workforce to get back onto union rolls.

On Election Night last week, one of Barack Obama's major supporters was not in Chicago savoring the hard-won moment.
Instead, James Hoffa was home in Troy, Michigan packing his bags for his first trip to Israel. Back in Chicago, balloons floated into the air and champagne bottles were uncorked without him.

Union employees at Giant Food and Safeway supermarkets in the Baltimore-Washington area voted overwhelmingly yesterday to approve a new four-year contract that largely preserves health care benefits and includes wage increases.
Members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Locals 400 and 27, which represents more than 23,000 workers, voted in separate meetings yesterday at the Baltimore Convention Center and the D.C. Armory.
As workers streamed out of the convention center after voting, many seemed surprised - and relieved - that they were able to hang onto company-paid health care.
