RESPECT Act Carries Potential to Bolster Unions (77.07K)
The so-called RESPECT Act could have a broad-ranging effect on skilled professional employees and unions, say a pair of local attorneys. The Re-Empowerment of Skilled and Professional Employees and Construction TradeWorkers Act - which is now out of committee and likely will be coming up for a vote in the U.S. House soon - would widen the pool of those eligible to join a union by effectively changing the definition of "supervisor."

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The National Labor Relations Board wants a federal court to force Massey Energy Co. to rehire 85 United Mine Workers members and negotiate a new union contract at a coal mine it bought out of bankruptcy in 2004. The NLRB contends in a petition filed Thursday that Massey and its Spartan Mining subsidiary will keep violating federal labor laws at the eastern Kanawha County mine. The petition asks the U.S. District Court in Charleston for an injunction.

West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park was charged by the National Labor Relations Board with suppressing union activities, and the hospital denied it. The NLRB cited an October incident in which a manager kept Torrence Shorter, a union activist and food service employee, from talking with coworkers. West Suburban is a member hospital of non-profit Resurrection Health Care Corp., the largest Catholic health care system in Illinois.

Unions Gird for Battle Over Casinos (66.10K)
Bay State unions are preparing to play hard ball on Beacon Hill in an all-out drive to win approval for casino gambling. State labor leaders - as they prepare for an annual confab next week organized by the Massachusetts AFL-CIO - are weighing a revamp of the rating system by which legislators are judged on their records on labor issues. One concern is that lawmakers can win high marks by voting for lots of noncontroversial bills, even as they fail to follow the union line on big issues such as expanded gambling.

Hotel Union Targets Trump Tower in Chicago (83.71K)
When the first guests check into Donald Trump’s downtown Chicago hotel over the next few weeks, they could encounter an unexpected welcoming committee: pickets. The celebrity New York developer is catching flak from a hotel workers union irked that he hasn’t signed an agreement allowing it to try to organize hourly employees at the 339-room inn. The hotel at 401 N. Wabash Avenue is set to open Wednesday, January 30, after a two-month delay. “Right now, it’s just an open question whether they’re going to be a responsible corporate citizen,” said Annemarie Strassel, a spokeswoman for UNITE HERE Local 1, which represents about 6,500 Chicago-area hotel workers.

ATLANTIC CITY - The United Auto Workers union kicked-off contract negotiations today with Tropicana Casino and Resort, as well as continued contract talks with Caesars Atlantic City, months after workers at the two casinos voted overwhelmingly to unionize. The casinos met separately at the Atlantic City Convention Center with teams of UAW representatives made up of union officials and casino workers representing the collective bargaining committees. UAW officials declined to specify details of the negotiations, but said wages, job security, medical benefits and pensions were among the topics concerning the more than 900 dealers and slot technicians at Caesars and the 1,075 dealers and slot technicians at the Tropicana that are now under union representation.

Union Numbers Are up in Pa., Del. (76.86K)
Reversing a decades-long downward trend, the percentage of the American workforce in unions edged up last year, the U.S. Labor Department reported. The change was minuscule - a tenth of 1 percentage point, from 12.0 to 12.1 - barely statistically significant. But for the labor movement, which is starved for any good news, even the tiniest upward blip is cause for encouragement.

Labor Unions Are Back, BLS Confirms (63.20K)
The number of U.S. workers who belong to a union rose by 311,000 to 15.7 million last year, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. BLS said union members accounted for 12.1 percent of employed wage and salary workers, "essentially unchanged from 12.0 percent in 2006." The growing Service Employees International Union, however, trumpeted the news, saying this is the first time in 25 years that union members' share has increased. In 1983, which BLS said was the first year for which comparable union data are available, the union membership rate was 20.1 percent.

Gould IV, a professor emeritus at Stanford University Law School and former chairman of the National Labor Relations Board, said he hopes the effort will serve as a potential model for other companies. Supported by a six-person staff, Gould said he will investigate workers' complaints and report findings to company officials.
