Sutter Roseville Medical Center and the Service Employees International Union, United Healthcare Workers-West have reached a tentative agreement on a new contract that includes a 15.5 percent raise over three years and protects benefits for hospital workers.
Officials said the agreement was reached last Friday morning, and a ratification vote is scheduled for this Friday.

Downtown’s newest labor boss is making bold predictions during his first weeks on the job, assuring passage of a liberal health care overhaul by the 2010 State of the Union, followed by imminent consideration of contentious “card check” legislation.
Newly minted AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka also is not ruling out launching television advertisements or rallying his members against a Democratic-backed health care bill if it taxes benefits, does not include a public insurance option or if it does not force companies to cover their employees.

Already strained under the weight of the recession, members of Sheet Metal Workers Local 73 feel pushed over the edge as they face a substantial dues hike -- nearly a 70 percent increase from their current rate.
Dues could jump from $337 to $562 per quarter, following a mandate from the international union to build up an empty six-month reserve fund. But for a lot of workers, it would be too much to endure.

School bus workers at the DeKalb, Illinois First Student yard will go out on strike the morning of Monday, November 16. The workers overwhelmingly voted down a company offer on Friday, November 13. Teamsters Local 330 in Elgin, Illinois, represents the 95 drivers and monitors and has filed unfair labor practice charges with the National Labor Relations Board.
Negotiations have been tense since company representatives refused to bargain at the last federally-mediated negotiating session and arbitrarily implemented their last offer.

Now that the U.S. House of Representatives has passed its version of a health care reform bill, all eyes turn to the Senate. No matter where you stand in the debate over issues such as the public option, big labor bosses hope you do not notice some lower-profile provisions tucked into the pages of this massive proposal. If they become law, these provisions would give union leaders considerable influence over health care decisions affecting us all.

Members of SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania voted Thursday to authorize a three-day strike on Dec. 2-4 at Pottstown Memorial Medical Center.
The union, which represents more than 250 technologists, technicians, licensed practical nurses, nursing assistants, secretaries and maintenance workers, accused the hospital of engaging in unfair labor practices and has filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board, the union said.

When a small sampling of the White House guest list was revealed several days, Obama campaign bankroller SEIU was at the top of the list. Having spent over $60 million to elect Obama, why should we expect anything different?
Earlier this year, SEIU president Andy Stern admitted he holds weekly meetings at the White House and, according to the guest list, several with the president himself. That makes Andy Stern one important man. Perhaps one of the most important in Washington, in fact.
