Nobody wins. Does anybody care?
This study could well represent the classic labor relations dilemma of not only what was said, but how it was said and heard.
This 9-minute DVD gives a chilling documentation of the conditions of a strike that affected so many who considered the hospital their home. Many cared greatly, as you’ll hear for yourself. But after the first four months of a strike affecting 280 nurses, few pickets are on the line. And many are looking for work elsewhere.
The Lourdes Hospital management says scheduling issues caused the break in relations. The striking employees say they wanted to be treated like people, “not as indentured slaves” as one says tells the camera.
The story returns you to the scene 26 months later, too, and here you see the sad result of the two-year stand-off: Eighty nurses crossed the picket line,165 full and part time nurses and 25 temporary workers were hired to replace the strikers who, at one time, thought of this as home.
The strike cost the hospital 3 million to 4 million dollars. And all strikers were replaced.
As one striking nurse declares, “Nobody ever makes up anything from a strike, including management.”
