Detroit Newspaper Strike: More than six unions participate
After 5-˝ Years.. Neither Side Says “We Win”
Throughout this 15-minute video you see and hear expressions of loyalty to the unions. As a viewer, you will wonder why as you learn more about economic struggles born from this striker solidarity. Striking employees talk about the difficulties of family heath, insurance and mortgage issues. Very few mention plans for the future.
At first, 2500 employees walked out over a contract offer by The Detroit News and The Detroit Free Press. But one striking lady describes the offer in terms suggesting she sees it as the end of all life as she knows it.
At the very time of the walkout the newspapers took immediate action to staff with replacement workers plus those few who would cross the picket lines. Not a day of publishing was lost due to the strike. Newspapers were printed and distributed everyday.
In the end, the strike lasts 5-˝ years. The newspapers report a loss of $200 million. And many union members believe they will never regain employment at the newspapers because the unions sold them out.
Nobody claimed victory.
